Press news - Ethical housing development in the heart of Barnstaple is a success story for social housing

Our Taw Wharf development, in the heart of Barnstaple, is proving to be so incredibly popular, it is seeing multiple repeat buyers.

The Taw Wharf development is creating riverside apartments and homes in a partnership between Anchorwood Ltd and local developers, Pearce Homes. We are working together in this ethical development to build market sale homes that are raising funds for affordable housing in North Devon.

As phase four of the project continues, it seems the homes can’t be built quick enough for some residents, as our Group Development Manager, Tim Hamilton-Miller has noticed.

“Taw Wharf has a real sense of community,’ he explains. “The residents look out for one another and are proud of their homes. We’ve seen many of our buyers who have decided to upsize or downsize their homes choosing to purchase again at Taw Wharf in order to remain in the community and enjoy the riverside location, so close to many amenities. We’ve also seen people who have been renting a property at Taw Wharf now deciding to buy. While some residents are also choosing to buy another property for the rental market as well as multi generations of the same family buying properties on the site. We are delighted that the project is such a success, as this is much more than a housing development.”

Taw Wharf is the first venture between Anchorwood and Pearce Homes, creating a housing development with a difference, although we have a history of partnership, having worked with North Devon Homes on other sites prior to Taw Wharf. Anchorwood Ltd was formed in 2015 by North Devon Homes as a sister company to help self-fund its own affordable housing.

“With government grants for social housing becoming more and more difficult to obtain, North Devon Homes pioneered Anchorwood as a way of funding more social housing for local people from market sale homes.’ Says Tim. “The profit received by us from every property sold at Taw Wharf gets reinvested back to North Devon Homes and is used to fund the creation of more affordable housing.”

By working in a joint venture with developers Pearce Homes we have been able to ensure that the investments not only help to fund new homes for local people, but also maintain existing homes. In addition, the partnership has  created new jobs and opportunities to help benefit the local economy, as Managing Director of Pearce Homes, Paul Knox explains.

“In all that we do we are committed to developing our people, improving our communities and enabling the local economy and this project epitomises that. As we enter our 78th year of business, our mission remains to deliver high quality homes across the South West of England. Our customers tell us they choose a Pearce Home because they know they are guaranteed the best quality build and outstanding customer care. We have been humbled to see our valued customers choosing a home on Taw Wharf because they know we have built them.”

The building company’s work on Taw Wharf has seen the Site Managers win a variety of awards for their work including the National Housing Building Council’s (NHBC) Pride in Job Awards and Seal of Excellence Award.

“We are proud of the awards that have been achieved by the team at Taw Wharf,’ adds Paul. ‘They are a testament to the hard work and commitment of our people and are very much deserved.”

Since it was established in 2015, Anchorwood Ltd have built and sold millions of pounds worth of new homes which will fund lots of new homes for local people that need them. Phase four of the five phase project, the Longbridge Quarter, continues with more homes being released for sale from late summer.
