Independent Living Communities
As well as our general needs affordable housing, we also have many Independent Living Communities where we offer a safe place for the over-55s to live and enjoy an independent way of living while also receiving an additional level of support. We also offer an additional support service that all NDH customers can take advantage of for a small weekly cost, which you can read about on our website.
Our schemes are well maintained and offer the same services as our affordable housing but they also have communal areas such as gardens, common rooms, and laundries where you will get a real sense of community. Our support officers and volunteers run regular community events on the schemes (open to all whether a resident or not), which gives a great chance to make friends and speak to our team.
Where are your communities?
We have several across North Devon. These include but are not limited to:
- Sellick Court in South Molton
- Medard House in Barnstaple
- The Candar in Ilfracombe
- Magdalene Lawn in Barnstaple
To find out about all of our communities, please view our contact us webpage.
Additional Home Support
We appreciate that every one of our customers has individual needs and preferences. We take time to get to know you and understand these and develop a support plan that suits you.
Our team of Support Officers has a huge amount of experience in helping people to develop or maintain their independence, allowing our customers to enjoy greater community engagement, better physical health outcomes and improved mental health.
We want to help you stay in your home and make the most of your money. Our support team can help with advice on benefits, budgeting and money issues.
We’ll work with you to improve your finances and your ability to pay your rent, and if we can't help, we can point you in the direction of other organisations if you need extra support.
Some examples of the help a Support Officer can provide are:
- Regular welfare checks through visits and/or phone calls
- Assistance to access appropriate health and care services
- Support in keeping regular appointments for health benefits
- Helping to establish social contacts and activities
- Assistance to move to a suitable property
- Accessing aids and adaptations
- Home safety checks
- Claiming benefits and filling in forms.
