Aids and Adaptations

Aids and adaptations are alterations or equipment that are fitted in your home that support you to complete day to day household activities safely and easily, enabling you to continue living independently in your home.

Aids and adaptations are changes or equipment installed in your home to help you carry out everyday tasks more safely and easily. These improvements are designed to support independent living and enhance your quality of life at home.

If you or a family member has a disability that makes daily living difficult, we may be able to help by adapting your home to better suit your needs.

What We Consider

When assessing whether an adaptation is suitable, we take into account:

  • Whether the property will continue to meet your needs in the future.
  • If there are no other more suitable housing options available.
  • Whether your current home is being used effectively (e.g. appropriate number of occupants, suitable location, etc.).

Types of Adaptations

Adaptations are generally classified into two categories:

Minor Adaptations

These are small changes that can often be arranged quickly and without the need for a formal assessment. Examples include:

  • Grab rails
  • Lever taps
  • External handrails
  • Additional stair rails
  • Specialist hearing equipment

You can contact North Devon Homes directly for minor adaptations. In most cases, our Home2Home Team will carry out the work, although we may use trusted local contractors during busy periods.

Major Adaptations

These involve more significant changes to your home and may require building work or specialist equipment. Examples include:

  • Stairlifts
  • Wet rooms
  • Level access showers
  • Access ramps

To apply for a major adaptation, you’ll need an assessment by a qualified Occupational Therapist (OT). You can arrange this by contacting Care Direct at 0345 155 1007. The OT will complete a Statement of Need, which is required to apply for funding through a Disabled Facilities Grant. More information is available at www.gov.uk/disabled-facilities-grant.

Stairlifts

North Devon Homes services and maintains stairlifts and other lifts in communal areas and in homes where the lift was already installed when the current tenant moved in.

If you install a stairlift yourself or through Care Direct, you are responsible for its maintenance and servicing once the installer’s warranty expires.

For stairlift-related queries, please contact us on 01271 312500.

Important Information

  • Responsibility: Once installed, you are responsible for maintaining any adaptations such as stairlifts or specialist toilets.
  • Approval: Please speak with us before starting any work. We may not approve adaptations if the property is not suitable.
  • Funding: We contribute a percentage toward the cost of adaptations, but we must consider available budgets and prioritise projects that make the biggest difference to our customers.
